Authors are conducting research on method to achieve high-level water tightness in crystalline rock with suspension grout like cement slurry is studied. Grout should be infiltrated into very fine fractures to enhance the water tightness. For such fine fractures, the clogging phenomenon of grout material at the entrance of rock fractures tends to occur, and it results in insufficient infiltration of grout. Herein, laboratory experiment is conducted to investigate the clogging phenomenon using steel apparatus with fine slits simulating rock fracture. The results indicate clogging can be prevented to a significant level by increasing the injection pressure, although grout material accumulates over the slit.

In the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory, water inflow into the shafts is disturbing the project progress. As a countermeasure for this problem, pre-grouting is being considered and pre-grouting has been undertaken in the shafts. This report describes an outline of the work results of pre-grouting.

The Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory, one of the main facilities in Japan for research and development of the technology for high-level radioactive waste disposal, is being constructed in Mizunami City. By October 2005, the excavation of the Main and Ventilation Shafts had reached depths of 172m and 191m, respectively. However, shaft sinking was then suspended for about 6 months due to high concentrations of boron and fluorine in the inflow water in the shafts, which exceeded the environmental discharge limits. To resolve this problem, an additional effluent treatment system was adopted, and shaft sinking restarted in April 2006. Pilot boring investigations were performed at the both shafts. This report shows the status and subject of investigations and construction of Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory.

Pilot borehole investigations were carried out at Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory, Mizunami Japan to obtain informations on design on water treatment facility, planning the grouting and design URL. The investigations were conducted dut to the excess of F and B concentrations in discharged water in the river near the URL. Major results of the investigations will be introduced.

Based on the results and experiences obtained from the tunnel sealing experiments in the Canadian underground research laboratory in crystalline rock under the collaboration with JNC (now JAEA), this report summarizes the requirements for closure components such as backfilling material and hydraulic plug from the viewpoint of expected barrier performance, taking account of key issues on sealing technologies which have been left open after H12 project.

Since a geological disposal repository of nuclear waste will be constructed at depth of a few square kilometers and will be operated for a several tens years, it is crusial to develop a long-term monitoring technology of rock behavior of quite large area. For this purpose, a conventional monitoring method needs a number of deep boreholes and thus needs a huge amount of cost. In this paper, the results of tilt measurements for the shaft excavation at the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory is presented.

The expected processes in the near-filed of a High-Level Radioactive (HLW) repository after emplacement of engineered barrier system are the coupled Thermo-Hydro- Mechanical and Chemical (THMC) processes. In order to validate the newly developed THMC model, the engineered scale experiment studies on the coupled THMC processes by COUPLE equipment have been carried out with a simulated engineered barrier. This paper presents the result of simulation on couple THC process in the COUPLE experiment and case study analysis for near field of HLW repository.

Near a high-level radioactive waste repository after emplacement of engineered barriers, coupled thermo-, hydro-, mechanical, and chemical (T-H-M-C) processes will occur. To predict these phenomena quantitatively and improve reliability in assessing the design and the long term performance of engineered barriers, JAEA has developed a coupled thermo-, hydro-, mechanical, and chemical (T-H-M-C) analysis model / code. In this report, authors evaluated the applicability of coupled T-H model under the condition of simulated near-field, based on the results of in-room coupled experiment. As a result, it has shown that the model which improved the fit to the measured data, is reasonable under this condition.
